Robbe, I always appreciate your humor and light hearted perspective that you bring to the podcast and beyond, but I think these most newsletters where you blend that with more reflective and contemplative content is really something special. Your thoughts on the man on the hill really have and will continue to stick with me. I appreciate the way you recognize the complexity of what it means to be human, and how that works its way out in both addiction and art. Thanks for writing these! I enjoy your thoughts.
I've been saying this for a long time, but it's only in the last year that I've known the extent of how true it is. Human beings have to be balanced. If you have incredible strength in one area of your life, you will have incredible weakness in others. Artists are not immune. Great topic. Great writing. Glad you told me to go back and read it.
I tread a fine line of separating art from the artist. I like your thoughts on it. I think, for me, as long as I’m not putting money in that persons pocket I can deal with it. I’ll read my Neil Gaiman books, listen to whatever music, but I can’t make a purchase for anything Wizarding World knowing that money will get into her pocket.
Interesting how you can separate the creation from creator but hold Mateo’s “family” problems accountable to the state and governor. The creator always will and has to be a little bit accountable for its creation otherwise what is morals, integrity or character even founded on. If you have no reputation/legacy to prove it.
A preacher can be a pimp (and some are)
Teachers can be alcoholics and sleep during class
Fathers can have multiple secret families.
All of those creators have a lot of influence on their “creations” or “art”
Mateo’s girlfriend’s brother (or whatever) is a product of the creator - his parents. That’s who should be held accountable. Yes I know the very layered issues that come w addiction and they are probs a lost cause (which is really sad) but holding the governor responsible for that family’s antics and future is like holding tooth and nail records responsible for the fact that MXPX doesn’t tithe regularly. Or something.
As always really enjoy your perspective and writing style - have fun in Austin.
I wouldn't say I hold the state accountable for their problems, they're solely responsible, but I do hold the state accountable for not performing the responsibilities of the state, which is to protect its citizens. I think we're on the same page.
Interesting topic about art outside of the artist. As an Oasis fan in the 90s, I can relate. Also, peak Russell Crowe in the Gladiator era throwing phones at people. I do feel like this sentiment is a product of our times (I’m also in my forties) and is a bit out of vogue these days.
Course 3 hit me just right. It’s kind of wild sometimes when I consider the darker themed music and movies I listen to. They are at such a contrast to my life. It’s a phenomenon I’ve pondered for quite some time.
Oh boy…. Such a test of character in listening to Mateo unload for 30 mins. You’re such a social sponge absorbing everything. Theres a great Glaswegian comic called Billy Connelly; who grew up on the government housing of Glasgow Scotland, and served his apprenticeship as a welder in the shipyards. His comic acts are all colorful depictions of the people he’d ran into at school, shipyards, pubs, streets and random situations. Your stories have the same effect on painting the canvas of your interactions 🫶🏻 Pure Dead Brilliant by the way

Thanks Grace! Really appreciate you reading, it means so much (also for listening to the podcast).

I feel like Geneva really helped us think about these types of things in a more nuanced manner, something I appreciate the older I get.

Hate hearing about Zach Bryan. I love his music.

Definitely an interesting thing to think about.

Thanks brother! And yes, I'm familiar with Sir William Connolly as an actor, though need to listen to his comedy more!
