Robbe - another incredibly thoughtful essay. We are in such an interesting place right now. Some of us have seemingly forgotten some the adages or notions that made things better - in my opinion. For example, focusing on the small things was one of those principles that can make such a huge difference. It simply showed that you were truly invested in someone else and their experience. So, here we are. One of the threads that runs through your essays in the loss of connection and community. So true. I spend a lot of time thinking about how we can restore those real and authentic connections. As you often point out, the running community provides one of those authentic and organic connection opportunities. You feel it when you listen to Victor Diaz’s story. There is a difference we can all make - and you, Thomas and Meaghan have made a a huge difference to so many. Now, where do we go from here.
And, I can report that I was very impressed by your “roll” yesterday - I happened to be behind you when you hit the pothole. Be well.
I'm glad you witnessed it 😂 My body is paying the price today. Thanks again for coming out, I was hoping to talk to you a bit more, we'll have to meet up for a run sometime soon since the other events are an absolute madhouse.
Runners world and it’s like are now trash in my opinion, I no longer subscribe to any of the publications and place any advertising from Hearst in the rubbish bin. I do not need to pay a fortune to be bombarded with advertising and virtue signalling articles. The last magazine I now buy is Athletics Weekly by Athletics weekly Ltd./21six Group (they had to move it to monthly to keep it in the black)
There is something deeper and longer term going on in North America which is applicable to your REI story.. but this is not the time or the place. Thanks as always for a good read (now looking into REI as I had never heard of the company)
I still have a print subscription to Esquire, but it’s a shell of its former self. Will probably end it after this year. Some print magazines are doing great things, like Mountain Gazette and Like The Wind. Once all these legacy pubs die off I think we’ll see a return to print but in a more thoughtful and authentic way.
This reader or bot was better, but I still missed hearing your voice in my head while I read. Start reading them. For the people who don't know your voice, it will create authenticity. For those that do, it will enhance the listening experience if they so choose to listen instead of read.
Well put. There is no dollar value on authenticity.
authenticity and genuine experiences create lifelong customers who repay for it year after year
Nailed it. I know you know this.

The “fall” was definitely more graceful than Mary Decker Slaney getting a flat tire from the barefooted Zola Budd.
