I think the BJJ community is similar to what you're describing with running except you get to choke each other. You could try that with running and see if people are into it.
I can't believe I got a mention in the newsletter. I'll mark this day on my calendar and celebrate it every year!
I love this topic and feel it's super important for people to talk more about it. We both love the idea of having super random friend groups and meeting new people, so I agree with all of your thoughts and am thinking about doing a neighborhood porch crawl. I'll call to get suggestions. #Natestowel
I stopped counting how many times this article gave me goosebumps, everything you discussed resonated in some way. Thanks for the delicious supper Robbe!
Another master piece. Growing up in Dorchester -part of Boston- think I’d feel right at home in Baltimore. I know all my neighbors and we even borrow sugar and take in each other Amazon packages. My other community is the Dorchester Running Club. I joined in 2017 after I started running. I’ve met the best people. We talk, text daily and I’m never alone. Hate zoom and I go into work everyday. I was WFH the first 6 weeks of covid. As soon as it opened up I went back in. Just getting in my car and grabbing a Dunkies before going into the office kept me sane. Gotta lay out my running kit for the morning. TIL next week. Cheers
Man, this was great, Robbe. It inspired me to write my own thoughts down a bit, something I rarely get around to but always feel good about when I do. I found my community in similar places recently. Outta Pocket TC is definitely my #1, but also church even though I have the same reservations that you allude to. Really appreciate your writing.
Get those thoughts out! Community definitely has its ups and downs and I can understand why some people may want to stay away, especially if they've been burned in the past. But it's such an enriching part of life when it goes well. Also, Outta Pocket is a GREAT community to be a part of, except for that weird Aldren guy ;)
Robbe, love this. I really appreciate when people ride for their city so hard, especially the unexpected places that don't get the shine major cities do. Knowing nothing of Baltimore, it's cool to feel the vibe of the city through your words -- gritty, Law-and-Order-scenes and all.
I have lovely friends and family, but to be honest, your question made me realize that I could be better about community building and engaging...connecting with people over a shared love of [insert verb/noun/]. Thanks for the food for thought bud. Keep on writing.
I may be held hostage to Baltimore, but I do love it (I think). Maybe I have Stockholm Syndrome. As with anything, it has its ups and downs that need to be navigated, but for my personality, I feel like it fits me just right. As per the community part, it does take a little bit of effort, especially when we're so tractor-rutted in our own schedules and habits, but going that extra mile to branch out into to something new is usually worth the effort. Thanks for reading!
I read each and every weeks but for some reason this one lived unread in my inbox for a little longer. Thank you for the great read and the reminder to maintain friendships.

I love that! Definitely the same kind of vibe.
